Discussion: Noriko and Kyong

Hi, everyone!

Welcome to the first week of the blogsary celebration—if you’ve seen the sidebar, then you’d know that this week, we’re going to be delving into Kyong and Lysette’s DNAU counterparts. Instead of posting a short a few times per week, I thought that it would be better for me to do some kind of casual post where I ramble and talk about the characters in focus. This is mostly because I wouldn’t be sure how to connect the Coa-verse to the DNAU-verse, and so that I wouldn’t have too much of a hard time posting come the start of the new semester.

I’ll be talking more in the post, so feel free to keep reading!

"This...will be interesting, I guess."

Traditions: A Coalesce Short (1/2)

“Are you going home, too?”

Jian paused his music and looked at the source of the voice. There was a much younger female sitting across him, sunglasses perched on top of her head and regarding him with a curious expression. She had a rose gold tote bag on her lap and a similarly colored carry-on luggage next to her; Jian found himself staring before managing a short, reserved answer.

“I am. Where are you off to?”

“Back to Seoul; I’m staying for Christmas and New Year before coming back here.” Her phone made a noise and she excused herself to check the message; Jian took the chance to observe her further. The female wore a white hoodie with a shirt underneath, light-colored jogger pants, and white sneakers. She looked familiar, he realized, but couldn’t quite pinpoint who exactly she was. “Sorry about that, my friend just wanted to see if I was here already. And you?”

“Taipei.” She nodded slowly and it went quiet between the two of them; Jian glanced back down at his tablet and (tried to) resume reading, though sensed that the much younger other wanted to continue conversation.

Well. He couldn’t blame her, not really—it was the holiday season, after all. Around them were bunches of people, both family and friends alike, who were all chattering away with each other about plans and whatnot. It seemed like they were the few minority who were travelling alone without anyone else.

Presence: A Blogsary Short

Atlanta, GA
United States of America
February 2017

“You have to admit that it was a pretty bold choice,” Eun-seok commented. Jin-kyong could only smile. “And I’m surprised that the higher ups were okay with you choosing to, you know. Doing that.”

“They’re not that cold-hearted.” she rolled her eyes and nudged him to a nearby coffee shop, “Now let’s eat. Please? I’m feeling a little hungry from that.”

“Got’cha.” the two entered, Jin-kyong sighing happily and immediately going towards the front to order. He watched her with a tiny smile before following, seeing the barista go a little starstruck at the sight of the two of them.

Eventually they were seated at one of the booths, Jin-kyong sipping at her drink. Eun-seok glanced at his phone. “The twins want to hang out here for lunch. You game for staying a little bit more?” she nodded and he sent an affirmative text back at Hae-won, then turned his attention back to Jin-kyong.

It almost felt normal, he decided. His eyes fell on her, the latter absentmindedly reading something on her phone. It almost felt like a normal day; they were busy chilling during one of their freer weekends, acting as if they were happy for once.

(It nearly felt like Soo-yeon was still there.)

In Grief: A Blogsary Short

i.

The twins deal with their grief in different, varying ways.

Hae-jin expresses her remorse online, through Twitter and Instagram. What follows is a sequence of memories; different unseen, filtered images as well as short videos lasting five seconds but meaning the world. After the memories and the tweets, she tells that she would stay off social media for as long as she needed.

@HJinnies: need a break from social media for a bit. i promise that i’ll come back soon. it’s what’s needed at the moment. hope you all understand. <3

Thankfully, the fans gave the space she needed. Hae-jin was seen much less after that; there wasn’t much media on her nor was there any reports on her brother. Most of the time, the two stayed either indoors or hanging around Eun-seok. They continued going to work, but the atmosphere and their mood was obviously subdued. She wore darker clothing, laughed less, and her smile was a bit dimmer, lacking its usual shine.

She stayed with Hae-won more, and they relied on each other until they were sure they were ready to start moving in the right direction.

#SquadGoals: A Blogsary Short

i.

Jin-kyong’s Instagram follower count is already at its thousands when she decides to pursue modeling as an actual career.

She can’t remember the fine details of her first venture onto the photography-based social media platform, but she knows that it had something to do with wanting to show how she styled her outfits. Lee Jin-kyong always had a certain eye for clothing and how to match; before she knew it, her follower count burst and she found herself posting other pieces of photography as well.

Eventually she found herself gearing towards aesthetic-related posts. 2015 was the year when flatlaying exploded, and she found herself bewildered at how everyone liked this clean style. So she tried it, found herself hooked, and incorporated it into her blogging.

She found fame on Instagram but it wasn’t enough to pay the bills; Jin-kyong, like any other millennial who was in need of cash, found herself flying from one job to another. Retail was a bitch (and so were the other customers), she was too nervous for something fast-paced like being a barista, and more than anything, she found herself too proud to go to her family and ask for a little more cash while she tried to make it out there in the world.

As nice as being Instafamous was, it didn’t really pay the bills. Sponsorships weren’t flying her way and neither were people who wanted to collaborate. Other bloggers got their deals with various makeup brands—makeup brands!—but she found herself stuck and unsure of what to do next.

That was until Kim Soo-yeon, a close friend she had maintained throughout her younger years, stuck her in one of her YouTube vlogs one morning.

Faces: A Russie Features Graphic

Assistance: A Russie Features Short

Jin-kyong’s Apartment
Atlanta, GA

December 2016

“Kyongsies?”

Jin-kyong barely lifted her head. The sound of footsteps filled the apartment and Song Hae-jin peeked at the form on the couch, a paper bag of takeout food in her arms. “Hae-won and Eun-seok are coming in a bit,” she continued despite the lack of answer from the other girl. “Eun-seok told me that you needed help getting your apartment back in top shape.”

“I don’t need help.” Despite that, Hae-jin set the paper bag down on the coffee table and searched for the cleaning supplies. “Hae-jin…”

“Don’t worry about it, Kyongsies.” She paused to look at the other and flashed a small, genuine smile. “I’ll get it done. You can stay there and rest all you want while we wait for the other two to arrive. Okay?”

The darker-haired model’s expression didn’t change. She merely gave a brief nod and turned on her side, curling up on the couch and pulling the blankets over her head. The smile on her face disappearing, Hae-jin sighed and resumed looking for the necessary tools needed in order to tidy up the other’s apartment.

In the span of an hour, Hae-jin had managed to make the place a little more decent. She had done a quick sweep of the floor and wiped off the counters, humming softly as she picked up whatever trash she could find and throwing it away. In the bathroom, she had wiped whatever she could, spraying a can of air freshener wherever she could.

Hae-jin wondered if cleaning up Jin-kyong’s bedroom was a good idea and for the moment, decided against it. She was left staring at the white door. “She isn’t staying in her own room for some reason,” she muttered, then took a chance and decided to come in.

From the couch, Jin-kyong barely stirred.

Premortem: A Russie Features Short

Club Stratum
Atlanta, GA
United States of America
October 2016

“This is the farthest from a posh model party,” Eun-seok groaned. Jin-kyong ignored him completely and went off to join Soo-yeon, who was busy getting drinks for the three of them. The blonde-haired lady turned once Jin-kyong tapped her on the shoulder, and a large grin came to the eldest one’s face.

“How are you finding it?” Soo-yeon had to yell. The music in the cramped area was increasing more and more as the seconds passed. Jin-kyong opened her mouth to reply but barely heard herself over the intense music that filled the area. Soo-yeon turned back for a moment to claim the three glasses and passed the pink one to Jin-kyong; she winked and motioned for her to follow her back to Eun-seok, who was most likely still in the same area with a dour look on his face.

In all honesty, Jin-kyong was sort of expecting a tamer party as well. Not one wherein she could take advantage of the open bar and end up dancing on the tabletops with a lucky guy or gal. Part of her agreed with the sullen-faced Eun-seok, but she didn’t dare tell Soo-yeon that.

To their amusement (and her pity), Eun-seok was indeed still standing there. Soo-yeon laughed and gave him the glass, and proceeded to comfort him. Jin-kyong caught bits and pieces of her words, the music jostling through them and the chatter of people around her disrupting the kinder, bubbly sounds that came from Soo-yeon’s glossy lips.

“I want to leave!” Eun-seok yelled.
