Ornaments: On Samuel Peters

Peters residence
Brooklyn, New York
November 2012
9:32 PM

Thanksgiving and Christmas had always been his favorite holidays.

Aside from the break he could catch on work on both events, it was always fun to see the house dressed up and decorated with an array of ribbons and baubles. His mother had always preferred to decorate the house pretty early; so much that it pretty much became habit for him at that point. Samuel can’t help but smile when he eyes the family pictures on the walls, each of which carefully laced with fairy lights his mother had gotten for cheap.

It’s a little unnecessary, not exactly having any ulterior purpose other than looking nice. But she liked it, and that’s that.

“As great as Seattle is, I missed it here.” He doesn’t have to turn around to tell that it’s his brother. Jake, who was four years older but also four inches shorter, holds two mugs of hot coffee in his hands. He offers one to Samuel. “Don’t really have the time to decorate the apartment down there.”

“Is your internship killing you that badly?” There’s snark in his voice, but surprise as well. Jacob had never missed out on decorating for the holidays, not even when he had lived with them before heading off to college. Samuel hears a small chuckle from his older brother as well as a sip of coffee. He takes a sip of his own.

“You’d be surprised. I’m thankful that I found a good hospital for my internship, but it’s about as hellish as I expected.” Jacob shrugs, “But that’s boring talk for you. How’s working at the station with dad going?”

The station. Right.

Discussion: Samuel Peters

Hi guys!

We’re pretty much coming closer to the end of the blogsary; we’re only eight days shy before we end the month and move on to September. Following today, we’ve got two more characters and I’ll wrap up the entire thing! 💙  I hope it’s been a nice experience for you guys. I’ll hopefully explain everything in my closer post, so look forward to that!

For now, though, we’ll be focusing on Samuel Peters. Again, similar to Jian and Mack, Peters’ name has remained the same despite the shift towards original fic. To prevent confusion, I’ll just insert “Coa” or “DNAU” in front of Peters’ name!

Feel free to click down below if you’d like to know more.

"I bet you want to know more."

Parental: A Coalesce Short (3/4)

Tadashi’s Apartment
Seattle, WA
United States of America
June 2017

While Samuel Peters was not normally the most patient kind of man, he knew when to shut up and listen when a co-worker was in distress. At least, that’s what he was doing at the moment—only nodding and humming in sympathy while Tadashi vented and vented. It had been happening for the past half-hour or so; since Peters had gotten there at Tadashi’s place with a box of takeout and the offer to do something productive like binge watch something or work on a report due the week after.

Apparently, ‘productive’ to Tadashi meant venting and letting his emotions fly free. This was something that Peters was not used to doing. Peters was used to being on the side of the venting; talking about his clashes with Aether, muttering angrily about how things had been back in Bronx. Typically, Tadashi would be on the other side, listening and offering words of wisdom that the American would find made much more sense than the irritation steaming in his head.

This time, things were going the other way around.

Peters wasn’t quite sure how to handle it.

Tadashi paced around his apartment, venting and shaking his head and speaking rapidly, quickly. In the midst of it, Peters could only cling on to a few words and phrases. Before he could speak up, Tadashi stopped in the middle of the living room and looked at Peters. “I’m not exaggerating, right?”

“Er—”

“I’m not exaggerating about Aether, right?”

“Uh.”

Peters and Mack didn’t know how the argument had escalated that badly.

All four members of Squad A were gathered in Aether’s office for debriefing purposes; after Aether had recounted the events of the day, Tadashi followed up with his usual spiel concerning their own personal safety. “Put yourselves first,” he reminded them. Throwing a glance in Aether’s direction, he continued: “We’re not going to get anything done if we don’t try and take care of ourselves. And that goes for all of us.”

“I can’t help but feel that you’re only targeting one of us,” Peters quipped. Tadashi said nothing; Mack tried not to look at Aether. The female merely glanced away and folded her arms over her chest. Looking unaffected was not one of her strengths; Mack could tell by the look in her eyes that she had gotten Tadashi’s message loud and clear. “So let’s address the elephant in the room—”

“No need.” Aether waved it off. Tadashi gave a frown and was about to speak up, to contest, but Aether carried on quickly. “I get it. I need to rest.”

“It’s not that simple, Aether,” he responded. The two of them looked at each other, Tadashi only looking more upset and Aether clearly trying not to get agitated. Peters muttered a yikes under his breath and Mack inhaled deeply. It was rare that the two ever got into arguments—if anything, the two who bickered the most were Aether and Peters, but a fight as serious as the storm that was brewing had last occurred long ago.

Wavelength: A TLFC Short

Peters’ Apartment
Atlanta, GA

“I suppose that Tadashi was right,” Aether admitted. Peters glanced at her. Both of them were in his apartment, casually drinking while waiting for the other two members of Squad A to arrive. “About both of us. That we have a lot more in common than we initially thought. Or than others tend to see.”

“Because we bicker a lot?”

“Because we bicker a lot,” Aether agreed. She raised her beer bottle and gently bumped it against Peters’, which was half-empty. “To be honest, though? I never quite expected us to be better friends than before, considering all the arguing we got into that time. Or considering that we almost fought it out in the middle of the hall.”

“I had high hopes.” She cast him a look, to which he lifted his hands. “Not joking, Aether. I really did have high hopes for us, even though I thought that you were really far up your ass and thought that you were better than everyone else.” He expect her to scoff and defend herself at that point, but to his surprise she just snorted into her drink and nodded calmly, most likely remembering how she was that time. “You could have been nicer.”

“I know. But you could have been less cocky,” she pointed out. Peters responded with a sheepish smirk. “We both got on each other’s nerves, not going to lie about that. If I had to be honest, though, one of the reasons why I disliked you so much back then is actually something stupid. Really stupid, come to think of it now.”

“Try me.”

Paired: A TFLC Short

Headquarters
Atlanta, GA

April 2015

“I’m sorry,” Aether managed, “we have to what now?”

Tadashi was able to keep a straight face as he had repeated what he had just said. “Both of you were assigned to a mission. To put it simply, both of you have to infiltrate a party happening this Friday and must acquire as much information as possible,” he said calmly. Aether still looked shocked and Peters had his brows furrowed; both of them waited for the kicker. Tadashi inhaled slowly before delivering the other piece of information, “And you can’t go as separate individuals. Both of you have to go as a pair.”

“And by ‘pair’,” Peters asked carefully, “do you mean as a pair of acquaintances or do you mean something more than that?” the look on Tadashi’s face was all the answer they needed. In response, Aether buried her face into her hands and Peters groaned. “This feels like a fucking plot from some kind of James Bond shit, except that you shouldn’t expect us to be locking lips at the end of the night.”

“For once, I agree.”

“We don’t expect kissing of any kind—both of you just have to go as a couple. Engaged or married, it’s up to you.” He lifted a hand before either of them could protest, “Department has already assigned fake names and have gotten you both into the guest list. All you have to do is to play the part.”

“And why us?” Aether asked. “It could have been Ross and Sol, they’d be much more convincing than Peters and I.”

Magic Hands: A TFLC Short

Headquarters
Atlanta, GA
United States of America
September 2016

For Aether, stress manifested both physically and emotionally. Working as Squad A’s Head tended to get to her; that, combined with the fact that there were reports to work on and meetings to attend, was enough for the stress to slowly take its toll on her as the months passed.

Emotionally, stress tended to make itself known when Aether was more irritated than usual, when she snapped more and when her temper ran low. On her worst days, she’d almost end up screaming (though that had happened only once, thankfully) and Tadashi would have to help calm her down to the best of his ability. If the rest of the squad had to be honest, then an angry Aether was never really the prettiest sight. Peters expressed this the most.

He tended to be on the receiving end of her anger; it had been that way since the first time they had met as members of the newly formed Squad A (then known as Squad S). Peters couldn’t understand her; Aether then was stiff, barely looked at him, and always wanted to prove herself to Tadashi. He initially thought that it was because she had a crush on the Korean, but as time passed he eventually learned that it wasn’t for the reason he had initially thought. The way he saw it before, she wanted to prove that she was could at what she could do. And that was fine with him. After all, he wanted to do the same, so he could sympathize.

If only she wasn’t so pushy about it.

Memory: A Coalesce Short

Headquarters
Atlanta, GA
United States of America
December 2016

Mack had a tendency to lose track of time.

He remembered the important dates, of course—he had celebrated Christmas a week back with the Squad. It was nice; they had exchange gifts and had brunch together at one of their favorite restaurants. The mood was at its best. Aether had been leaning against Tadashi and laughing as Peters told one of his stories from high school, and Tadashi had an arm casually wrapped around Aether’s shoulder. Peters was drinking and telling about one of his many failed dates when he was a high school freshman, and Mack—

Mack was watching, observing. And even then he felt happy.

That was Christmas, at least. When they had to get back to work two days after, Mack found himself losing track of time yet again and busying himself with work, just as he did for the rest of the year. There were times wherein Tadashi had to tap his shoulder and ask if he wanted to join them for lunch, and Mack was prone to meal skipping so he quickly agreed.

When he would tell others—like the Squad—that he tended to lose track of time and dates, Peters joked that Mack might end up forgetting his birthday eventually. The rest of them laughed at that, and Mack himself admitted that something like that could very much happen in due time.

And it did.

Cover Up: A Russie Features Short

Headquarters
Atlanta, GA
United States of America
December 2016

The Monday after it happened, Mack came to work bearing a violet scarf snuggly-wrapped around his neck. He second-guessed at first, wondering if it would be suspicious if he wore it the entire day; but then again, the weather had been growing colder and it was Christmas season. Mack didn’t have an excuse to not wear it—it would look completely inconspicuous.

Or at least, that’s what he had thought. Aether had also been wearing a scarf of her own—red as wine—when he arrived at the office, sipping at her usual mug of coffee and leaving a light lipstick stain on it. “Cold day,” she commented, green eyes spotting the scarf. “I thought you weren’t the cold type?”

“It’s almost below ten,” Mack defended. She nodded slowly and took another sip from her coffee, Mack approaching the coffee maker to pour himself his own mug. “How was your weekend?”

“It was good.” Aether gave a small smile, “Went Christmas shopping. The company party is in one, two weeks? I thought that it was best to be prepared. Mathieu and I went together, he had to get gifts for his friends also.”

He threw her a cheeky smirk. “Did you get him something, or did you just get some ribbons? If you know what I mean.” Mack chuckled at the sight of her cheeks reddening and narrowly dodged a crumpled paper thrown his way. “Touchy, I didn’t know that you were the type.”

Deserving: A Russie Features Short

The Cage
Atlanta, GA
United States of America
October 2016

“You two are disgusting,” Peters sighs.

Aether merely flashes him a middle finger as she cuddles against Mathieu, the other grinning and holding her a little bit tighter than he already was. “Don’t aim your bitterness at us,” she snipped back. “We didn’t even do anything to you.”

Peters gives Tadashi a look. “Look at them, Tad. Gross.” But Tadashi shakes his head and smiles at the couple, watching as Aether presses a kiss onto the redhead’s jaw.

“Not my fault you’re single.” Aether mutters. Mathieu bites his lip and snorts into her hair; she feels the trembles from where she is and can’t help but smile even more herself. “Again: no need to be bitter.”

Peters is about to retort when Tadashi interrupts smoothly. “Let them be, Peters. We all need some happiness tonight, anyway.” Aether shot him a thankful look before leaning in and kissing Mathieu lightly, the other kissing back just as happily. “They’re cute. And this is one of the rare times wherein we see A not as uptight or as stressed as she usually is.”

“I get stressed with reason,” she murmurs against Mathieu’s lips. They pull away eventually, with her leaning her head on his shoulder and he gently running his fingers through her hair. Peters watches them. He finds himself agreeing internally; it was indeed one of the times wherein Aether was more relaxed, assured. His banter and teasing was merely just for fun.

Strained: A Russie Features Short

New York City, NY
United States of America
March 2015

It was Aether who had to break the silence.

“I don’t want to make this awkward,” she started, “but I noticed something weird going on between you and your dad a while ago. Are you two okay?”

“It’s nothing,” Peters replied shortly. Aether and Tadashi exchanged a glance but didn’t pry. Peters merely continued unpacking his clothes, taking out an outfit that he was to wear the following day. “It’s just been a while since I’ve last seen my old man. Or any member of the family.”

“We can always take him up on his offer.” She fixed her hair into a bun before continuing, “When we finish up here. I think your parents would like it, and so would your brother—”

He interrupted her. “We’ll see.” Before she could protest, Peters got up and excused himself to go to the bathroom, leaving behind a befuddled Aether and Tadashi, the latter’s face appearing blank for only a moment. They heard the door shut and Aether huffed, folding her arms over her chest.

“I don’t understand,” she muttered.

“Don’t understand what?”
